The Modern Mining Trail is a self drive tourism experience that takes visitors on a journey to see the world class gold and copper mines where advanced technology and a pursuit of excellence has enabled NSW to be on the world map in mining. Spanning over 43,000 kilometres across Central New South Wales, the Modern Mining Trail features six mines as the signature attractions: Northparkes Mine and the Peak Hill Open Cut Experience (Parkes), Newcrest Mining's Cadia Valley Operations (Orange), Barrick Cowal Gold Mine (West Wyalong), Great Cobar Mine and Peak Gold Mines (Cobar). A range of tour experiences are available at each of the major sites with booking information available from the website. Visit the many associated attractions along the way including the Henry Parkes Centre, Peak Hill Open Cut Gallery, historical village of Ophir, Golden Memories Museum Millthorpe, West Wyalong Gold Tour and the Great Cobar Heritage Centre.

The Douglas DC3 Dakota is located in Lions Park on the junction of the Newell and Mid Western Highway's, West Wyalong. Built in 1943 in Oklahoma City, the plane was donated to the West Wyalong Lions Club. The designation 'DC' stands for 'Douglas Commercial'. Production of civil DC-3s ceased in 1942, although military versions were produced until the end of the war in 1945. The DC3 is the world's most successful commercial aircraft with 10,928 examples being built.

Joining the townships of Wyalong and West Wyalong, the walking/bike track journeys past interesting outdoor art, several parks with barbecue facilities and play equipment and Holland Park Pool. The walking track also takes in the Wetlands and boardwalk. The cycling/pedestrian track called the Green Corridor Walking and Cycling Track starts at the Junk Art Sculpture on the highway side of McCann Park and heads east to Wyalong. It is 4.4 kilometres long. The course is marked by clusters of poles, painted by school children, the elderly and Aboriginal members of the community. It takes in Barnado Park, Holland Park, Northcott Street Park, Cooinda Bushland Reserve and some unusual artworks.

They also sell Pure Blue Mallee Eucalyptus Oil, locally harvested; in a variety of quantities and other local produce. Visitors can enjoy exhibitions by local and visiting artists, with the exhibits changed on a regular basis to keep the gallery fresh, also giving local artists a chance to exhibit their works in their own exhibitions. Holland Park Swimming Pool is a great Olympic 50 metre swimming pool, with beautiful water quality, water slide, diving boards, barbecues, and kids play pool. It is the perfect place for a great day out, so call in and visit whilst travelling on the Newell or Midwestern Highways or Goldfields Way. The kids play pool is covered with shade cloth for excellent protection from the sun.

Lake Cowal is New South Wales' largest natural inland lake at approximately 21 kilometres long and 9.5 kilometres wide with an average depth of around 2.5 metres and covering an area of over 13,000 hectares when full. It is a dedicated bird and wildlife sanctuary where a diverse species of waterbirds make their home. The Lake is listed on the Register of the National Estate for the diversity and the number of species that inhibit the lake. It can be accessed from a public reserve off Clear Ridge Road West Wyalong. The birdlife on the lake is amazing, over 180 different species have been identified ranging from seagulls and pelicans to ibis. Many of the species are either rare or endangered. The lake is popular for photography, bird and nature watching are also popular.

The West Wyalong Visitor Information Centre is in the library at the Bland Shire Council Chambers. There you will find brochures, and information about local events and attractions. The twin towns of Wyalong and West Wyalong retain a feel of the bygone gold era, with many historic buildings, old-style shop facades and wrought iron verandas.
