Houses and their owners have a tendency to be reflections of one another. Vaucluse House presents venerable Gothic Revival façades to Sydney Harbour but the mansion, built in fits and starts between 1805 and the early 1860s, is in a mixture of styles, is unresolved in terms of its layout and lacks the social grace of a formal entrance.
Its builder, William Charles Wentworth (1790-1872) is known today as one of our early colonial statesmen. His sense of his place in societywas undermined by illegitimacy and convict associations. With the rising tide of Victorian morality his wife Sarah was shunned as lacking respectability and the family had to socialise outside of colonial society. Vaucluse House’s lack of cohesion is perhaps a result of Wentworth’s brooding anger at this slight and the house’s slow growth over decades. In contrast with the house, the grounds preserve a remarkably complete 19th century estate plan with stables, rural outbuildings, carriage drives, paddocks, lawns, a serene pleasure garden and recreated Victorian kitchen garden.

Zensara was inspired by an exotic fusion of French and Oriental influences. The French influence is reflected in the design of the reception area, in the pampering, indulgent aspect, and in the exquisite aromas. The Oriental influence is apparent in the serenity of the relaxation areas, as well as in treatments such as shiatsu and warm stone massage.
Time permitting following treatments, we will encourage you to relax in one of our Oriental-inspired areas and transition back to reality gently. Sometimes this quiet contemplative time can be as beneficial as the treatment itself as you connect with your own essence, gazing at our bamboo garden outside, or sharing a cosy nook with a buddha while sipping an exotic tea.
The meaning of Zensara is derived from three Japanese kanji characters, which combine to mean discovering your true purpose or your spiritual path, and hopefully you will experience the essence of Zensara on your visit.
Nature has been the inspiration for our spa and our own Zensara aromatherapy range of products is intended to bring you closer to nature, delighting your senses with products containing extracts from flowers, fruits, herbs, wood and spices.
It is our mission to sprinkle magic in the lives of our clients – creating moments you will always remember. We hope too that you will leave with a sense of serenity, having nurtured your body and nourished your soul!

The Hayden Orpheum at Cremorne began life as The Orpheum on October 3, 1935.
It was, at the time, a much grander movie theatre than most suburban movie houses, and for many years made the clumsily-worded boast of being “Sydney’s only suburban city movie theatre”. The justification for this claim was that it was built as a theatre, and could screen films or live cast musicals for its 1735 seats, over two levels.
Backstage there were dressing rooms, an orchestra pit, and a functioning fly-tower to store and ‘fly’ scenery. It was a proper ‘legit’ stage and played host to the Australian ballet etc.
The theatre remained intact, albeit very run down, until it was bought by commercial property developers. Despite the protests of some theatre supporters, it was savagely ripped apart, and a second-rate shopping arcade and a health gymnasium installed. A concrete slab was installed horizontally, and the only part of the theatre that remained above it was the decaying art deco ceiling and parts of the proscenium. It was virtually inaccessible to all - apart from the pigeons who made it their home.

The people who brought us the genteel sophistication of the original QVB icon have are behind this second Tea Room in another historic location. This edition has its home in the stunning sandstone setting of the Gunners' Barracks - a picturesque building dating back to 1873 and surrounded by tranquil gardens and bushland. Traditional silver-serviced afternoon tea gets a big swig of brash Sydney style with dazzling views of Rose Bay and Camp Cove. North shore socialites now have a new place to do lunch, and Mosman matrons will be thrilled that they can enjoy the decadent teas for which the Tea Room is known, without crossing the Bridge. A sparkling (or Champagne, if you please) afternoon tea will prove a popular choice in such luxurious surrounds, and away from the hustle and bustle of the CBD it's easy to laze away an afternoon gazing out over the water.

Can’t afford your dream house? Neither could Colonial Secretary, Alexander Macleay. He had the vision to develop the site from 1826 onwards as a fine landscape garden and build Elizabeth Bay House – then dubbed ‘the finest house in colony’– but his children asked 'where was the money to come from?' Macleay’s life long obsession with entomology plus the loss of his government post in 1837 required him to seek numerous loans from his eldest son William.
Though this house looks grand, it is unfinished and a mere six years into his stay William foreclosed on him, effectively forcing him to leave. Want to know what happened next? Visit this harbour-side property and find out.

Built in 1858, Sydney Observatory is Australia’s oldest observatory, and one of the most significant sites in the nation’s scientific history. It is recognised as an item of ‘state significance’ by the New South Wales Government and is heritage listed.
In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Observatory was essential to shipping, navigation, meteorology and timekeeping as well as to the study of the stars seen from the Southern Hemisphere. The Government Astronomers worked and lived in the building until 1982* when Sydney Observatory became part of the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences.
Today the Observatory is a museum and public observatory with an important role in astronomy education and public telescope viewing. It contains an 1874 29cm lens telescope, a 42cm computer-controlled telescope and a hydrogen-alpha solar telescope, able to be viewed through by visitors during booked sessions.
