Visit the antiquated Augusta Water Wheel to see how water was pumped to the nearby Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse and the lighthouse keeper's cottage back in the 1890s. Read the information plaque about the sites history, the water system and the fresh water spring it flows from. The easily accessible site offers picturesque views of the surrounding coastal scenery and is within the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park. Enjoy a one hour walk from the Water Wheel to Skippy Rock which leads you along beaches, rocks and through the coastal bushland of the national park. A detailed brochure about the walk can be found at the Augusta Visitors Centre. The Water Wheel is a short 10 minute drive south of Augusta and four hours drive south of Perth.
Parker Point Marine Snorkel Trail is located on the southern side of Rottnest Island, a popular holiday destination 20 kilometres off the coast of Perth. The easy Top Trail features a number of plaques on the sea bed which allow you to read about the abundant flora and fish life in the area. The plaques are identified with buoys making them easy to find and are equipped with two handles to hang onto. As the water is a bit deeper and the swim area larger, the more experienced snorkeler would enjoy this trail, whilst less confident swimmers may prefer the trail at Little Salmon Bay. The water conditions on the trail are generally calm, clear and spectacular, allowing superb viewing of the vast array of marine life. Access to Parker Point is by Rottnest Bus or by bicycle. Rottnest Island is well known for its lack of vehicular traffic, just some service vehicles and the round the island bus. Therefore the main form of transport is bicycle. It's possible to ride around the island (26 kilometres) in half a day, but to enjoy the cycle stop off at some of the many pristine beaches along the way, including Parker Point.

Pristine Islands, reefs and ship wrecks make for excellent diving, snorkelling and wildlife watching in the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park off the coast south of Perth. At Penguin Island, Little Penguins breed in the burrows - watch them being fed at the interactive centre. The island is also home to breeding colonies of silver gulls, fairy terns, bridled terns and Caspian terns. The reefs surrounding the islands provide good snorkelling and diving and abound in marine life including sea stars, urchins and molluscs as well as a number of fish species. Take to the water here and you'll probably run in to a pod of bottlenose dolphins which are extremely common in the marine park. You can go swimming with dolphins on tours which operate regularly. Seal Island is home to a colony of rare Australian sea lions which can often be seen fishing and swimming in nearby waters. Shoalwater Islands Marine Park is also home to the Saxon Ranger, a 400 tonne former fishing vessel - the first purpose sunk dive wreck in the Perth metropolitan area. Dive permits are required. Shoalwater Islands Marine Park is accessible from Rockingham which is less than an hour's drive south of Perth.

There are only two horizontal waterfalls on Earth and you can look wide-eyed and open-mouthed upon both of them at Talbot Bay in the Buccaneer Archipelago of Australia's North West. The white waters are thrilling to ride by boat and awe-inspiring to view from the air. Join a scenic flight or sea safari to the Horizontal Waterfalls from Kooljaman in Cape Leveque, Broome or Derby to see and experience it for yourself. So, what makes the water fall sideways? These incredible natural wonders are the work of some of the largest tidal movements in the world. As the tide ebbs and flows, a huge volume of water is forced through two narrow cliff passages, creating a variation in ocean level of up to four metres and a unique waterfall effect. You'll need to base yourself in the Kimberley towns of Broome or Derby, both of which offer a good range of accommodation options and a choice of sedate or adrenalin-fuelled Horizontal Waterfalls tours.
