The Orchestra consisted of just 24 players, who performed incidental music for radio plays, music for the dinner hour and broadcasts of concert repertoire. The first significant concert event in which the orchestra took centre stage occurred in 1934, when the renowned Irish conductor Sir Hamilton Harty visited Australia which led to calls for the creation of a permanent concert orchestra for Sydney.

When The Strand opened in 1892, it was the fifth and last of the arcades built in Victorian Sydney. Today, it is the only one remaining in its original form.

When English architect, John Spencer unveiled his plans for the arcade in the mid-1880s he received a standing ovation. The plans were ambitious. The arcade was to be 340 feet long, and three stories high, running between Pitt and George Streets. Magnificent cedar staircases at each end of the arcade led to the second and third floor galleries which were linked by a central bridge.

The arcade was one of the first Victorian buildings in Sydney designed to take into account the harsh Australian climate. The roof was to be made of glass, specially tinted to reduce glare, and the access gallery of the top floor was projected to shade the lower levels.

The name "Pinchgut" arose soon after, as convicts who had committed secondary crimes were charged and confined in leg irons on the island, with rations of bread and water. The Martello Tower was completed in 1857 using 8,000 tonnes of sandstone. The island was renamed Fort Denison in 1862 after the then-Governor, Sir William Denison. The Martello Tower is the only one of its kind in Australia. Fort Denison became part of Sydney Harbour National Park in 1992. Across the front of the building faade, neon text (Always was, always will be) isincorporated into the geometric diamonds. In this urban context the meaning is clear - this was Gadigal country and always will be Gadigal.

The Sydney Harbour Trust assumed responsibility for the Lighthouse in 1900 and undertook renovations. For many years after automation in 1933, it sat neglected and later became a victim of a dispute between the Commonwealth and the State government as to the future of the site. The area is now part of the Sydney Harbour National Park administered by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service.

Shark Island Logo and Images

Shark Island

Off Rose Bay, Sydney City NSW 2000

Shark Island offers a picnic experience that's a little bit different! The island received its name because of its shape and not its wildlife. One kilometre off Rose Bay, the 1.5 hectare island has spectacular views down the harbour to the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House. Shark Island is said to have resembled a shark and the shallow waters around it presented a constant danger to shipping, especially with the growth of trade in the early 19th century. Between 1880 and 1975, the island was used as an animal quarantine area, a public recreation reserve and a naval storage depot. There are picnic tables and shady trees. Explore the rocky foreshore, the hand-built grottos and the island's sandy beaches. Facilities: drinking water and toilets. Shark Island is available for picnics, wedding ceremonies and special events - hold up to 500 people.
