Established as a wholesale fruit and vegetable market, Fremantle Markets succumbed to competition from Perth Markets and ceased to operate in 1965.
In 1975 a local businessman, JEV Murdoch, responded to an “expressions of interest” call from the City of Fremantle, raised the seed capital necessary to restore the Markets to a viable condition, and managed the business as Head Lessee and Manager. Through a succession of leases granted by the City, the Murdoch family, via a number of different business entities, has managed the Markets ever since, and last year Fremantle Markets Pty Ltd (FMPL) was granted a new 18-year lease.
