Information about FREMANTLE HISTORY MUSEUM
The Western Australian Museum – Fremantle History (also known as the Fremantle History Museum) is housed in one of the most magnificent buildings in Fremantle. It gives you a wonderful opportunity to discover the history of the coastal town of Fremantle. View displays from the early settlers of the 1800s and find out about the significant role Fremantle played during World War I and II. Learn about the huge wave of immigration in the 1950s, and the America’s Cup win which put Fremantle on the world map.
The 1860s building holds an interesting history all on its own. Built by convicts, it became the colony’s first mental asylum and later became a land base for the US Navy in World War II. Take a free guided tour of the building which is now also home to the Fremantle Arts Centre and Immigration Museum.
