The trail was built with picks, shovels, crowbars and dynamite between 1906 and 1907. It involved cutting a zigzag staircase into a cliff face and became a very popular walking trail. After 95 years service, the National Pass was tired and fraying badly in places and it was closed in 2002 to start a restoration project. After several years of painstaking reconstruction, the trail re-opened and won major heritage conservation awards. There is a wide choice of excellent accommodation within a short distance of either end of the trail.
