Kempsey Museum features the history of the Macleay Valley from before white settlement to the present day, including a pioneer cottage furnished using historical items. Set in South Kempsey Park, next to Visitor Information Centre. Displays include aboriginal history, boot making, timber industry, military history, natural history, dairy industry, shipping, historical vehicles, Shorty Ranger and local country music, telecommunications, textiles, silverware, ceramics and glassware, and the Angus McNeil glass negative photography collection. Bus groups welcome.

South Kempsey has the award winning Val Melville Centre which houses the Macleay River Historical Society's Museum, the Visitor Information Centre and the Dunghutti Ngaku Aboriginal Art Gallery. The building was designed by the internationally known architect Glenn Murcutt. The architecturally stunning Slim Dusty Centre is also located on the Macleay Valley Way at South Kempsey due to open in October 2015, when completed will be an iconic Australian experience built around the legendary country music star and Australian country music.
