William Joyce, the first settler in the Hills, was given a grant of 30 acres in 1794 near today's Junction Road and Old Windsor Road. Andrew McDougall, a settler from Buckholm Hills, County of Roxburgh in Scotland, was given land in 1799, which he named Roxburgh Place. He was responsible for giving the district its present name. Once home to Elizabeth and John Macarthur, pioneers of the Australian wool industry, it is a rare example of an early Australian colonial homestead. There are no inhibiting room barriers, so you can wander freely through the house, draw up a chair to a table, read family letters and newspapers, relax on shady verandas or warm up before an open fire and imagine life in the early colony. The Tea Rooms are situated in a recreated 1830s garden and are open on Saturday and Sunday from 10.30am to 3pm for light meals and refreshments....

For seven decades, it was the 'country' residence of 12 early governors of the colony, including Governor and Mrs Macquarie who preferred the clean air and space of rural Parramatta to the unsanitary and crime ridden streets of Sydney Town. The central block of the house was built in 1799 by Governor John Hunter, however the house today owes most to Governor and Mrs Macquarie. Their 1815 extensions, designed by Macquarie's Aide, Lieutenant John Watts transformed the house into an elegant Palladian style residence.
