The museum has three rides to choose from being the main line, bay road or miniature rides that let the children experience a piece of Australia’s narrow gauge industrial railway history restored and in service, and also there is The Ken McCarthy Museum Building museum building to look at and the historic Yallah Station and the Former Otford Signal Box, these historical artefacts had been enjoyed at by their parents and grandparents alike. Food & Souvenirs are available in the tramway dining car, the grounds of the museum are a great place to escape to that trip back in time; the kids can play in the playground while the adults relax in the barbecue area. Train operating days when the Museum is in full operation including demonstrations are from 10am to 4pm are held on the second Sunday of each month, Sundays of Public Holiday weekends and the fourth Sunday of January. Cordeaux Dam was completed in 1926 and was the second of the Upper Nepean dams. It is 57 metres high, holds water from a 91 square kilometre catchment, and forms a lake of 780 hectares with a capacity of 93,640 megalitres. Take a look at the valve house and pylons, built in a Neo-Egyptian style. The dams of the Upper Nepean collect water from the catchments of the Cataract, Cordeaux, Avon and Nepean rivers, which are tributaries of the Upper Hawkesbury-Nepean River. These systems supply water to the Macarthur and Illawarra regions, the Wollondilly Shire, and metropolitan Sydney. Facilities include picnic shelters, electric barbecues, drinking water, toilets, disabled toilets, playground and viewing areas. Bookings are required for groups of 50 or more.

Sydney Microlight Centre is Sydney's closest approved microlight training facility. Lake Illawarra is located between the Illawarra escarpment and the Pacific Ocean on the NSW South Coast some 90 kilometres south of Sydney. Water flowing into it is both fresh (from the escarpment) and salty (from ocean tides). The Lake is approximately 9.5 kilometres long and 5.5 kilometres wide, with an area of 33 square kilometres and a maximum depth of 3.7 metres. 13 boat ramps surround the lake and is a popular recreational location. The lake is a popular spot for fishing, prawning, and all water sports. There is a boat and catamaran hire close by as well as several caravan parks. There is also a shared pathway that can be enjoyed by all. Reddall Reserve on the foreshore of Lake Illawarra is a popular spot for picnics with its children's playground, amenities and kiosk.

Windang Beach is located at the entrance to Lake Illawarra, 15 kilometres south of Wollongong's city centre. It offers spectacular views of the famous Five Islands off the Wollongong coastline. The beach is very popular with families and there is accommodation nearby at the local caravan park, which has views of the lake and the ocean. There is a large park at Windang Beach with barbecues, sheltered picnic areas, a playground, and a cycle path. Windang Beach and Lake Illawarra are good fishing areas. Dogs are banned on Windang Beach however to the north the middle area of the beach is a dog friendly off lead area. Please view Wollongong council dog zoning areas for clarity.

Hill 60 Lookout is reached via a narrow but well formed established walking track and offers spectacular views up and down the coast line. A series of post and rail guards can be found at this interesting and spectacular spot. Just below the lookout are beaches fished commercially by local Aboriginal fishermen up until the 1940s. The area has numerous Aboriginal shell middens and artefacts scattered along its shores. Deep beneath the lookout lies a series of fortifications, established at the beginning of World War II. These fortifications housed large guns which were put in place to protect the vital industrial centre of Port Kembla. Although there are no longer any large guns here the concrete bunkers can be clearly seen. These bunkers are connected to a series of underground tunnels which honeycomb the entire area. These tunnels are not accessible to the public.

Port Kembla Beach is regarded as one of Wollongong's most prestigious beaches. It is located approximately 11 kilometres south of Wollongong. The surf club was established in 1910, with bathing at Port Kembla Beach dating back to the 1900s and the first dressing sheds erected in 1912. The surf club is perched on the high fore dune, overlooking the northern end of Port Kembla Beach, the longest in the Wollongong area at 6.6 kilometres. The club is complemented by a large car park next door. There is also a large Olympic pool on the northern rocks. The beach is patrolled from the end of September to the end of April. Port Kembla Beach is not a dog friendly beach however south of the Surf Life Saving Club begins the off lead area for dogs.

The Southern Oceans Seabird Study Association (SOSSA) conducts studies into the natural history of the Illawarra and its environments. Founded by the members of the New South Wales Albatross Study Group (NSWASG) in 1994, SOSSA was set up to be an umbrella organisation for many study groups concerned with studies of Southern Ocean biodiversity.
