For fishing folk there are five rivers of the fishing trail in the Balranald region, they include the Lachlan, Murrumbidgee, Wakool, Edward and Murray Rivers. Balranald Shire Council assists local fishing clubs restock these rivers with native fish. The five rivers are within 30 minutes of Balranald township. Copies of the Five Rivers Fishing Trail brochure are available from the Balranald Visitor Information Centre 78 Market Street Balranald.

Various early explorers - including John Oxley in 1817, Charles Sturt in 1830 and Sir Thomas Mitchell in 1836 - visited the area. It was Mitchell's enthusiastic comments about the quality of the land in the region that encouraged settlement, and Balranald was gazetted in 1851. As a crossing point on the Murrumbidgee River, Balranald prospered throughout the second half of the 19th century. Discover local histories along the Balranald Heritage Trail, which passes sites of historic significance. A map is available from the Balranald Visitor Information Centre.

Ben Scott Memorial Bird Trail is part of the Tri-Avian Corridor - walk through the mini-wetlands on the tracks and boardwalks to the bird hides. Look for and listen to the sounds of birds in the bush. Look out for the Spotted Harrier, Rainbow Bee-eater, Yellow Throated Miner or the Striated Pardalote and many others The Bird Trail has two bird hides and a wooden bridge over the water that is in the depressions at times. Water is allowed to flood the bird hides area when available, however this does not stop Visitors from the bird hides and higher areas.
